Importance of Proteins, Fats and Carbs

What is a calorie?

A calorie is simply energy.  Everything you eat (mostly) has energy.
Calories are made up of macronutrients which are made up of proteins, fats and carbs. All of which are important for daily activity and weight training.

  • Required for structure; used for new tissue growth and repair; maintain body functions

  • Recommended: minimum 100g per day or
1 gram per lb of body weight  or lean muscle mass

  • Are the body’s main source of energy; needed for physical activity and operation of organs
  • 4 calories per gram
  • Recommended: 30-45% of your total calorie intake

  • Provides backup energy; protection of organs; body temperature and growth and development

Your micronutrients are very important also, which are your vitamins and minerals.  Micronutrients do not have calories though but are an important part of health!
